A rampant Rafael Nadal shut down Dominic Thiem’s challenge to secure his 12th French Open title in a four set victory.
The 33-year-old has now won at the Roland Garross for the third consecutive year with a 6-3 5-7 6-1 6-1 victory in a breathtaking and highly intense final.
The Spaniard has now won 18 Grand Slam titles, and he made history as the first player to win 12 titles at any single Grand Slam tournament.
The world number two player is now only two singles title adrift of Roger Federer, who has 20th titles, and three more than world number one Novak Djokovic with 15 Grand Slam titles.
Thiem, 25, lost in three straight sets to Nadal in last years French Open finals.
