Embattled U.S Singer R.Kelly has been taken into custody on the orders of a Judge in Chicago over his failure to pay up $161, 000 in child support payments hours after he tearfully and angrily denied allegations of sexual abuse in a TV interview.
The Judge ordered him remanded in jail until he is able to pay the amount owed his ex-wife for child support in full.
The 52 year old R&B singer was taken into custody after a court hearing in Chicago on Wednesday.
Kelly’s lawyer argued that he was in financial difficulties, describing the state of his finance as a “mess”.
The singer has been at the receiving end of a boycott campaign tagged “Mute R.Kelly” and his record contract has been terminated.
Last month, he was charged with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, involving four alleged victims, three of whom were alleged to be minors at the time.
His lawyer told the court that he was ready to pay as much as $60,000 of what he owed his ex-wife Andrea Kelly and three children, stressing that he has been unable to work, but the Judge declined the offer and ordered him detained until he pays what he owes in full.
The self-acclaimed king of R&B is expected to remain in jail until his next court hearing scheduled for March 13th.
