THE Nigeria Senate on Thursday confirmed the appointment of Godwin Emefiele as governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN for another five-year term.
The senate confirmed his appointment at plenary in the senate chambers by 11.30 this morning, following the consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions.
The report was laid for consideration by Senator Rafiu Ibrahim, PDP, Kwara, Chairman Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions, and it was considered and approved by the senate.
Emefiele was screened by the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions on Wednesday, during which he was grilled in issues affecting Nigeria’s economy.
The screening exercise came after President Muhammadu Buhari forwarded a written request to the Senate for Emefiele to be confirmed as CBN Governor for a second term of five years.
Consequently, president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, mandated the committee at the plenary on Tuesday to screen the CBN governor and report back to the Senate within a week.
Emefiele, who was appointed as CBN Governor on June 2, 2014, is due to end his first term on June 2, this year.
