Nigeria’s Senate President Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara, speaker of the House of Representatives, were conspicuously absent at the Eagle Square, Abuja, during the 2018 Independence Day parade.
Since 2015, this is the first time that both men would miss the programme organised on an annual basis.
Aside President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Walter Onnoghen, chief justice of Nigeria (CJN), attended the event.
A former head of state, Yakubu Gowon, was also in attendance.
The non-attendance of Saraki and Dogara might be related to their frosty relationship with the government of President Buhari, which has made them decamp from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
